In commercial real estate, it’s common to hear about spaces that are “just sold” or “newly leased!” There’s often a spotlight on the deal—the square footage, the price, the broker’s creative strategy. The people behind the business—the first time business owners, the family owned and operated shops, the passionate entrepreneurs, those who make up the heartbeat of a community, are often overlooked.

At Deca Property Management, we believe our role goes far beyond just signing leases or maintaining buildings. With over 100 commercial units across 8 properties, our goal is to foster long-lasting relationships with the businesses we serve. Whether it’s a small retail shop or a growing medical office, we’re here to support our tenants from day one and help them thrive.

In this tenant spotlight, we are excited to introduce Maria Howe, owner of River City Retro, a vibrant antique shop located at 6411 Hampton Avenue, right in the heart of South City.

The Space—6411 Hampton Avenue

Located just off Loughborough on the southern end of Hampton Avenue, this 2,220 square foot retail space is hard to miss. With its towering front windows, high ceilings, and Art Deco charm, it provides the perfect canvas for a visually striking retail experience. It’s a spot many South City residents pass daily—and if you’ve ever glanced inside, you’ve likely been treated to a colorful display of treasures, including antiques, art, books, collectibles, furniture, and a bit of whimsy (yes, we’re talking about the King of Rock and Roll who catches the eyes of passersby).

Maria—Owner of River City Retro

Maria Howe, a lifelong STL local, has a deep passion for antiques. She has been buying and selling items for years but finally has found a retail space to call home. After her first year at the Hampton location, Maria signed a renewal to stay at the property and continue bringing River City Retro to life. Let’s get to know Maria more and hear her story.

Why did you start your business?

Maria’s journey began by visiting antique booths and finding a love for old items and the nostalgia behind them. She loves rescuing items from dusty basements or dark storage units, finding creative ways to display them in her store, and placing them into the hands of people who truly appreciate them. River City Retro was born from that passion. For Maria, it’s not just about selling antiques—it’s about storytelling, preserving history, and giving items new life and have them be loved again.

What is your favorite part of running the business?

Treasure hunting—Maria’s 9-to-5 does not always allow room for creativity, so her store has become a much-needed outlet. Every display is an expression of her creativity and an effort to bring the items to life—and her customers feel that the moment they walk through the door.

Why did you choose this space?

As a South City resident, location was key. But beyond proximity, it was the space that won her over. The tall storefront windows immediately caught her eye—perfect for flooding the space with natural light and showing off her ever-changing displays. And the building’s Art Deco flair? A perfect match for an antique store.

How many employees do you have?

River City Retro is a true local business, employing three staff members, all of whom live in the surrounding South City neighborhoods. It’s a business built by the community, for the community.

Tell us about the Elvis cutout in the window.

Ah yes—the King of Rock and Roll. Found at a flea market, the life-sized cutout now stands proudly in the front window, flanked by a mid-century Hawaiian-style couch and chair set, to match his style. He’s more than décor—he’s a local landmark of sorts. Maria explains that people always stop to look and he draws them in. So, next time you’re in the area make sure to stop by and say hi—”Don’t Be Cruel.”

What is your favorite item in the store?

favorite pieces tend to rotate, but at the moment it is an oil painting by Masao Kinoshita, a beautifully framed mountain landscape in an old carved wooden frame. The artist has a rich and fascinating background—one Maria recommends you read about if you appreciate art and history.

How has your experience with Deca been?

Maria said working with Deca has been a great experience. She shared that Deca makes the lease process straightforward and transparent, and she added that it feels like Deca really wants tenants to succeed in the space.

We take pride in hearing that. Our approach to commercial property management is not just about filling vacancies—it’s about helping businesses flourish. Whether that means quick maintenance responses, fair lease terms, or simply being available when needed, we’re committed to creating an environment where business owners can focus on what they do best.

Stop In and Say Hi!

Whether you’re on the hunt for a unique vintage find or seeking something fun to do, Maria and her team are always happy to chat and share their love of antiques.
